The Denver Capitol was the most challenging tag so far. We actually had to hit it from the side because they designed it so there’s no parking in front. It’s a beautiful building, great night lighting. The Hope Tag looked beautiful here. We did attract a security guard after a few minutes, he seemed to be taking our plates, we assume no APB has been issued since we made it out of CO with no hassles. It was great having the extra crew around to help keep an eye out.
The lovely and talented Clint Fuhs of iLIfe and Integral Institute infamy kindly rallied his friends and family and took us all over Denver doing a couple shows and tagging like it was going out of style. We managed to get the capitol and the art museums before doing our first Spanish only show.
We did get asked to leave downtown but oddly only for our sound. They didn’t seem to care about the video so we took that is our cue to head out and do some huge Tags. Thanks to our sweet freinds for hosting what we think was one of our best nights. They were setting up for Obama’s rally the next day near our museum tags and their volunteers took pictures.
We decided to stop in Dillon, CO on route to meet our posse in Denver and came upon Pug Ryan’s. This sassy little pub and restaurant ended up being the home of the lovely and talented Chris. He’s originally from the UK and is voting Obama!
Dillon was cold and snowy and beautiful, this picture of the lake the town sits on reminded us what we love about insanely beautiful country!
Our Good Friends at Canella’s turned us onto a party at a local hot spot called the TRAPP DOOR. It was a mixed crowd, which we love, and Justin the promoter let us pull into the side and shoot over the outside lounge for hours. It turned out to be a pretty rowdy night, lots of professional drinkers and crazy antics out front. At one point I was filming the madness and a older gentleman asked me what I was doing and was very aggressive about it, he thought I was from the LDS Church filming the antics of drunk gay people. I assured him that the last thing this gay boy would do is film the drunk antics of other gay boys for anything other than my own enjoyment, needless to say he lightened up after that and danced with me a bit during our show.
We got so excited about Salt Lake City that we forgot to post about our morning with BILL CLINTON. Bill spoke to students and volunteers at Truckee Meadows Community College. We thought he was surprisingly funny and personal. He started off saying he just wanted to talk and not give a speech and that he did. He really inspired people and showed a real sense of humility and humor, not to mention he’s looking pretty hot these days. All this running around helping the Obama campaign seems to be wearing well for him. He hung out for a while after talking to volunteers and generally seemed in great spirits.
He highlighted an ongoing theme in the campaign the we really support “NO HATE IN ’08!” This has come up from people on the streets as one of the things they are proud of the most about what they see in Obama, no slandering and name-calling. I think for once taking the high road seems to be resonating with the majority of voters out there, people are “just ill” about all the negative campaigning. Our intention to keep it positive is really what gets the most comment from everyone we’ve come across, what a relief!
After spending a few hours working in the architecturally stunning SLC public library, we rolled a few blocks down the road looking for dinner. At the corner of 5th and 2nd we saw Cannella’s Restaurant and Lounge and felt the vibe. The tall hunky waiter was wearing an Obama button, so we gave him an Obama-rama flyer and told him about our tour. Turns out we landed right smack in the middle of a pro-Obama scene – thanks Universe!
Meet Camron and Joey, the hot owner of Cannella’s, our new best friends in Salt Lake! And be sure to visit Cannella’s at 204 East 500 South – besides the good-looking crew, they have excellent food, great wine and a sleek, sexy ambiance.
Cam and Jose told us that Utah is going to surprise everyone in this election. Bush won by something like 80% in ‘04, but they believe that it will be a much closer split this time, maybe 60-40. They told us story after story of conservative Republicans who can’t stomach the direction this country has taken, don’t think McCain has the vision to get us back on track, and are appalled with the choice of Palin as running mate. They said a McCain-Palin lawn sign is a like an endangered species around here and that Republicans who are planning to vote red are ashamed to admit it. Go Utah!
Cam called the owner of Orange, a bad-ass little bar/dance club at 5th and 5th and we did a parking lot show for the kids. After the show we went around downtown and did a few tags. Notably, the Utah State Capitol has come out for Obama. We hit a few other buildings too – check our Flickr page for more pix.
It turns out that tagging is the perfect thing to do after the local authorities have kindly asked us to stop disturbing the peace with our groovin’ Obama-tunes (check our Obamaramatour playlist on YouTube, by the way). However, we are unaware of any laws that restrict the projection of light onto building surfaces. Its no different from shining a flashlight or a laser pointer at a wall, really. Well, maybe the only difference is that our flashlight has 10,000 lumens and shows pictures of Obama. If they don’t like the picture that our flashlight makes on the wall, well then, that might just be a 1st amendment issue…
Our last night in Reno, we tagged another casino, and beamed a message of hope onto this boarded up little derelict house. Bye Reno! We miss you already! We’re in Salt Lake City now…gonna do a show and a few tags tonight.
By the way – join our TWITTER group – puh-leeze!!! This is how we can keep it guerrilla style and let our growing network of followers know where we are going to be so they can tell everyone they know in our tour stops to parachute in to our spontaneous street parties…got it? We’re testing the 6-degrees network, so lets make it happen people!
Check out our new Flickr gallery for more of our tag images… follow the page link on the right!!
Sorry for the dates getting little mixed up, Carson City actually happened before our first tag, not that it rally fricken matters. The Carson City vibe was so cool we couldn’t turn in for the night and that’s what led to trying out the VIDEO TAG! one of our supporters KAI Ichikawa said we should hit every city’s monuments and “tag” them with the now infamous Shepppard image of Obama, so in honor of Lady Ichikawa, we are doing just that! SO Kai, hope you enjoy this first round of images, check out the gallery for more.
These three hilarious guys showed up on the top of a parking garage while we were tagging. They said they were voting democratic for the first time because they couldn’t handle Palin and they thought Obama was cool, they freaked on the tags and felt better after being assured that Obama really wasn’t that weird of a name, good guys, nice and hammered…hey its Reno, they don’t close up shop here…ever.
This Tag was over 60 feet and towered over the streets, we had fun watching people trying to figure out what heck was up, Viva Obama!
Carson City is the state capitol with a small town vibe about 40 minutes south of Reno. We thought we’d head out and see what they had to offer for the night last night. The “TAGS” you see from last night came after we were in Carson City for a couple hours. We found a cool little club and decided to use an abandoned hotel across the street as out screen, nothing like a 10 story image to get some attention! Everyone in the bar loved it and we like to think everyone driving by loved it too, what’s not to love? Stephanie requested the WILL I AM video made famous last summer, we love that one too! Her and I sat on the ground and watched, it always feels so right to connect with people like this, its amazing how videos like this touch people. So we;re sending you LOVE Sweet Lady Stephanie, thanks to you and your cool friends for handing out and VOTING for OBAMA!
